The class is currently working on...
Math: We're working on fractions! We finished a unit on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and regrouping with fractions. Now we're focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers, a tricky concept for many students, since it's a form of division. You can help your kids by asking them lots of questions about fractions in real life situations: If eight of us are sharing pizza, and 1/4 like pepperoni, how many like pepperoni? If 32 kids in class are eating in the multi, and 1/8 brought lunch from home, how many brought lunch? Any real world situations will do!
Language Arts: We're focusing on how to read fiction texts, including understanding characters and making inferences, and using evidence to justify their answers. The most important work you can do with kids is to read with them every night and discuss their reading, especially the parts where the author doesn't spell things out completely, or leaves the meaning ambiguous. Our novel is The First Rule of Punk, by Celia C. Perez, a book about identity, belonging, and following your passion!
Social Studies: Our area of study this year will be the history of the United States of America, with a focus on the revolutionary era. We’ll be looking at the early history of the thirteen colonies, the economic development of the country, and the role played by slavery in our politics and culture. Through, our emphasis will be on how our country is all about cooperation between ordinary people.
Writing: We're doing our persuasive writing unit. Students will focus on writing texts which convince others using effective reasons with a logical development and an original voice. They are learning to address subjects they feel passionately about!
Science: Our next unit will be about chemistry, and how different materials interact with one another! We're always focused on experimentation and the scientifc method.
